How Food, Toys, and Grooming Change Throughout the Year

As a pet owner, I’ve learned that just like humans, pets need different care depending on the time of year. My dog Max’s food, toys, and grooming needs change throughout the seasons, and I’ve found that adjusting his routine accordingly keeps him happy, healthy, and comfortable. Here’s how I tailor these elements to suit the changes throughout the year.

1. Food: Adjusting for Seasons

Max’s diet varies throughout the year based on his activity level and the weather. In the colder months, when we’re not out walking as much, I notice that Max’s appetite changes, and he tends to put on a little weight. To accommodate this, I switch to a lower-calorie formula in winter and monitor his portion sizes more closely. On the flip side, during the summer months, when we’re outdoors more often and getting in longer walks, I opt for a high-protein, energy-boosting food to keep him fueled for our adventures.

Why it matters: Seasonal changes in activity level and temperature affect your pet’s energy needs. Adjusting their food ensures they maintain a healthy weight and get the nutrients they need throughout the year.

2. Toys: Keeping Max Engaged

Max’s toys also shift with the seasons. In the winter, when we’re indoors more often, I tend to rotate in more interactive toys, like puzzle feeders and treat-dispensing toys. These keep him mentally stimulated when we can’t get outside for a run. During the summer, when we spend more time outdoors, I focus on toys that encourage physical activity, like frisbees, balls, and tug ropes. I also love giving Max new outdoor adventure toys, like a floating fetch ball for water play.

Why it matters: Just like us, pets need variety and stimulation to prevent boredom. Changing toys with the seasons helps keep your pet entertained, physically active, and mentally sharp.

3. Grooming: Tailoring Care for Each Season

Max’s grooming routine changes as the seasons shift. During the spring and summer months, his coat needs extra care due to shedding. I brush him more frequently to remove loose fur and prevent mats. I also make sure to bathe him regularly, especially after trips to the park or muddy walks. In the fall and winter, his coat isn’t as prone to shedding, but I still keep up with brushing to prevent mats, especially around his ears and paws. I also use a moisturizing dog shampoo in the winter to prevent his skin from getting dry.

Why it matters: Seasonal changes affect your pet’s skin and coat. Regular grooming tailored to the weather helps keep them comfortable, reduces shedding, and prevents skin issues.
